Comment Guidelines
We want everyone who visits DailyCristo to benefit from an intelligent, respectful and appropriate dialogue about the events, ideas and issues of our day. In order to have that kind of constructive conversation, it’s important that we treat each other kindly (especially when we disagree with each other). If in doubt about what that means, you can simply follow this rule of thumb: comment on ideas only, never on people, and express everything you write here as you would if you were speaking to a dear friend.
For those who need more specifics, we ask that you . . .
Be polite. Avoid offensive comments of any kind, including comments in ALL CAPS (which is yelling), and comments containing obscenity or curse words, including words with symbols substituted for letters, and substituted words obviously intended to leave the same impression in readers’ minds.
Be gentle. Regardless of how strongly you might feel about a topic, refrain from personal attacks of any kind, including but not limited to racism, bigotry, and insults based on religion, nationality, or sexual preference.
Be relevant. Don’t make comments which add no new information to the conversation and/or do not inspire deeper thought, such as comments clearly made simply for the sake of making a comment (“Cool!” or “Good job!”), comments about grammar or spelling, repetitive comments, nonsensical comments, and/or incomprehensible comments. Also avoid off-topic comments, including personal remarks or question (“By the way, Bob, how’s your mom?”), and posts announcing unrelated news. (If you have a tip on a news story for DailyCristo, contact us directly).
Respect your host. Don’t take advantage of our forum by posting spam of any kind, including minimal comments with links to other websites or blogs. (If you fully participate in the conversation and then leave a link to a site with more information directly relevant to the conversation, that’s fine. If you simply want to advertise a blog or product on DailyCristo, please contact us directly.)
Respect other people’s time. Remember this is a back-and-forth discussion, not a church service or a classroom. Overly long comments and comments that seem like lectures are not appropriate here.
Be wise. Posting personal information where millions of strangers can read it will only lead to trouble, so do not include your full name, address, phone numbers, e-mail addresses, etc. Don’t post another person’s personal information, either.
Be decent. Not that we think you’d do a thing like this, but unfortunately, these days it still needs to be said: links to pornographic websites, hateful websites, or any other website with content that violates any of these comment guidelines will result in the immediate and permanent removal of your right to comment on DailyCristo.
Be part of the solution. If someone on DailyCristo isn’t behaving properly, refuse to reinforce their misbehavior with any kind of response at all. (The silent treatment usually encourages these people to either behave or go away.) And be sure to let us know about problem comments by flagging them. We’ll take it from there.
