This new idea could save a ton of money when the summer heat is on. Your air conditioning system has a closed loop of piping that contains a liquid which absorbs the heat inside your home. As it absorbs the heat, the liquid converts to gas. The hot gas is piped outside where it’s compressed back into a cool liquid before traveling inside the home again to cool the air. The trouble is, the hotter it is outside, the more energy it takes to compress hot gas into cool liquid.
Enter the Cool-N-Save.
Using the same water misting technology you may have enjoyed on a hot summer day while dining outside at your favorite restaurant, this simple device cools the air around the air conditioner compressor unit outside your home. The manufacturer claims it can lower the air temperature around the air conditioning compressor by as much as 30 degrees. Since this means the air conditioner compressor has to work 30% less, it naturally results in a comparable reduction in the energy costs to cool your house.
We checked with a commercial architect who tells us the science behind this idea is perfectly sound. In fact, similar technology has been used for years to reduce energy expenses for commercial buildings. If the manufacturer’s savings calculator is accurate, we estimate the Cool-N-Save could result in a roughly $16 savings for every $100 spent to cool your home to 78 degrees.
One drawback: as near as we can tell, this device only works on air conditioning compressors with horizontal fans, which blow upward. It probably won’t function properly on units which blow sideways, so if you own that type of compressor, you should call the manufacturer to make sure it will work on your unit before you buy.
This is such an excellent idea. It’s simple enough to install yourself, and it genuinely saves money while cutting back on energy consumption, which is good for you, and good for the environment.
