Catholic Charities Defends Religious Freedom In Gay Adoption Lawsuit

After adopting law allowing civil unions for gay couples, the state of Illinois terminated its contracts with several branches of the Catholic Charities organization because the charities refused to place orphans in gay households. However, the same law allows for exceptions based on religious belief. Catholic Charities is suing the be reinstated in the Illinois adoption system in a landmark case which could have far reaching effects on the current national debate about same-sex marriage versus freedom of religion.
